Continuing our journey of the Cashbox Caravan, (recently performing in France and Sweden) we had two official showcases and both were met with resounding success. In addition, our acts performed at other venues throughout Indie Week, all to great reviews and accolades.

The first Cashbox Caravan Showcase was Thursday, November 14 at the B-Side Lounge, a cozy gem of a venue with a great stage and friendly staff. A cocktail hour show from 5-7pm featured Toronto’s newest shining star Ventresca, followed up by veteran singer-songwriters Barry Stagg and Don Graham.

Cashbox Canada Magazine Hosts Two Showcases at Indie Week 2019

The Cashbox Caravan continues its journey, having stopped in France (MIDEM in Cannes, France) and Orebro, Sweden (Live at Heart Sweden) and ending our year back here in Canada at the ever-popular Indie Week 2019.

“The idea behind the travelling Cashbox Canada Caravan was to give indie artists a chance to showcase at major events and have the opportunity to perform for agents, pr people, and labels with first-class sound and on professional stages all on a global level,” says organizer Sandy Graham. “We are proud to be able to offer an alternative way of showcasing at major events where the competition for submission is so high.”

Now the third event this year of the Cashbox Caravan will be back in the country of origin for the magazine, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

“Indie Week has given us the opportunity to bring talent from other areas in the world so we will be able to have acts from not just Canada, but Sweden, Spain and the USA,” Graham says.

The first CASHBOX CARAVAN SHOWCASE is at the cocktail hours of:
5 pm – 8 pm
Thursday November 14
B-Side Lounge (669 College St)

BTW-Kete Bowers, Heather Bambrick, Waingro, Altameda, Tome, Go North Music Festival, Tribe Royal

Fri Jul 12 2019
Kete Bowers

It’s a blue-skied and sunny day and pouring out of the speakers is the most melancholic UK voice since Bert Jansch. It belongs to Kete Bowers, a Liverpudlian singer-songwriter and it’s rolling out the tunes of the current album, Paper Ships. It has a Canuck connection, produced by and featuring Michael Timmins alongside his Cowboy Junkies drummer brother Peter and released on the Current Records. The material is very much about loss, depression, fear and despair on both a community and individual level, delivered in tones reminiscent of Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt.

The Case For Tribe Royal

Fri May 03 2019
Tribe Royal

So, four hunks of burning babe magnets, three voices entwined in celestial harmonies, two savage guitars, pumping bass and one unifying vision on drums and to date, with zero ineffective ballads which even rock.

This is Tribe Royal, musical children of Ottawa with a deep investment in the honeyed sounds of yesteryear’s amber colored folk rock as dished up by the likes of CSNY and The Byrds but not Sonny & Cher. They are all young dudes tho so they don’t get all tribute bandy about their music, just keep kickin’ it 21st century streetwise while shaping and moulding a specific creative vision.

Which is what?

Before we get into that, the speaking voices of founder/members Chris Kerwin and Terry O'Brien are similar and their speedy, tag team style of answering questions makes it diff to figure out who’s replying. So we’ll hear the quotes as coming from the dual mind of Kerwin O'Brien.

So, the vision thing. Is Tribe Royal looking to build a distinctive sound?

Ottawa’s Tribe Royal have had an incredible 2018, and what better way to be closing out a successful year than by performing in your hometown with family, friends and fans.

November 30, 2018, Tribe Royal is set to take the stage with special guests Drae & Six Points North.

The year was definitely one that had this local Canadian band garnering attention worldwide. First on the agenda was going to the legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama studio, The Nutthouse (engineered by Jimmy Nutt himself) work with legendary producer, Norbert Putnam. Putnam, who has a credit list a mile long brought out the best in the band, producing a Double A side release of Holding On listen here https://youtu.be/uNRGrysoPq0 and Good to Me listen here https://youtu.be/qz_LraJXxf0).

Tribe Royal About to Hit Sweden’s Live at Heart Festival

Fri Aug 31, 2018

It has been a whirlwind year for Ottawa’s Tribe Royal, the new band with a vintage sound.

Teaming up in early January with Toronto’s marketing and strategy company, EMG, was the beginning of what was to be several life-changing events. In February, Tribe Royal played to a full house at Babylon nightclub, a well-known music haunt, more than six months removed from their headline show in their hometown. In June of this year, they returned to the scene with an opening show with Australian reggae-rockers Ocean Alley at The 27 Club thanks to SpectraSonic.

A few months into the year, discussions started with the exciting news that the legendary producer Norbert Putnam (Joan Baez, Dan Fogelberg, Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury and Jimmy Buffett to name a few) was interested in doing a two-song production in Muscle Shoals at the famous NuttHouse Recording Studio.

In November of 2017, I had the good fortune to record in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the uber-talented and esteemed producer Norbert Putnam. Norbert gained his accolades for his productions, Jimmy Buffett, Dan Fogleberg and Joan Baez to name a few as well as voluminous sessions as a bass player and owning and operating one of the first independent recording studios in Nashville, Tennessee, Quadrefonic Sound Studio. We recorded at The Nutthouse Recording Studio and the experience was amazing.

Tribe Royal to Showcase in Ottawa with Special Guests Lux

Fri Jan 05, 2018

Ottawa has a best kept secret that is about to be a well known fact. Tribe Royal, with their sophomore album “Colours of the Sun’, are a breath of fresh air in the indie market.

On Saturday, February 10, 2018 Tribe Royal will be hitting the stage at the Babylon Nightclub, along with their special guests LUX. Tickets are only $10 to see two smoking hot bands.

Tribe Royal garnered attention last year with their release of their first single, “Wasting Time” and the again when they performed for the RBC Bluesfest with Sam Roberts.

Tribe Royal consists of Terry O’Brien, voice and guitar, Chris Kerwin, voice and guitar, bassist and vocalist Bram Al-Najjar and drummer Mike Giamberardino.

In O’Brien’s words, “I love playing 60s-style pop songs that are done in under two minutes but I also love longer, jammier deep-feel stuff. With us, it really is a balance trying to get everything in there without compromise.”

Tribe Royal Colours of the Sun

Fri Nov 17, 2017

‘Wasting Time’ is the title of the current single by Tribe Royal, not a description of the band. If anything it’s the exact opposite.  This Ottawa based band is anything but wasting time.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a new band that has a sound so unique that it’s hard to label them. The sound is retro but blended with a rawness and originality that stamps them with a current sounding musical offering. You know you want to listen to more of the tracks.

Tribe Royal Colours of the SunOn their sophomore CD, “Colours of the Sun”,  there are shades of The Beatles, a little Lovin’ Spoonful and on the current single ‘Wasting Time’ some Green Day. Add some Everly Brothers-type harmonies spiced with some Red Hot Chili Peppers guitar sounds and you get the idea.

The band consists of Terry O’Brien, voice and guitar, Chris Kerwin, voice and guitar, bassist and vocalist Bram Al-Najjar and drummer Mike Giamberardino.
