The inspiration for the song “The Best Is Yet To Come” came from Shiny Glide’s unwavering faith and optimism in the face of adversity. “What I learned is that once you fall in love with your dream and your art, faith and hope become a bigger and bigger inspiration in expanding your soul and evolving spiritually.”

After releasing a trilogy of melodic, irresistibly catchy dance music albums (and a few singles) over the past few years, (independent Canadian artist) Ryan Shane Owen has begun to shift his music in a new direction. Looking to incorporate more elements of comedy, which has always been a big artistic influence in his work, Ryan has been looking to various comedic sources for inspiration.

One evening while brainstorming, with the news on broadcasting the horrors of war in the background, a phrase came to mind that Ryan remembered from one of his favourite 'Seinfeld' episodes. In the episode, Jerry jokingly tells Elaine that the original title for Tolstoy's "War and Peace" was "War, What Is It Good For?" To Elaine's chagrin, she believes him, and embarrassingly relates the 'story' to her book-publishing industry boss. Jerry's joke references a line from the 1969 song "War" by Edwin Starr.

“The Well of Friendship"

 Originally from Brandon, Manitoba, MacNaughton's spark for music began when he first heard Mike Oldfield's 1973 album Tubular Bells. Fascinated by Oldfield's ability to perform every instrument, MacNaughton found this multi-instrumentalist songwriting adventure something he would love to pursue.

Armed with a background in performing and a love for all things rock and jazz, MacNaughton began to develop his songwriting talent five years ago, leading him to be a regular face in and around the Toronto music scene. MacNaughton is now to release his first 8-track album in 2023.

When this happens, sometimes the right song can rally the spirit and give you the courage to prove people wrong. By the song's first verse, the electric guitar takes over and adds a toughness that matches the gruffness of McCuaig's vocals. Vancouver musician Tissa Rahim has released her latest track, “Before Someone Else Does,”, bringing the Persian Powerhouse to the forefront of the Soul/RnB scene. It’s a mild departure from Rahim’s typical RnB sound, but she maintains her powerhouse vocals and emotional performance while explaining to her theoretical partner that he’s had his final warning.

“Before Someone Else Does” marks the first release in the collaboration between Rahim and Alvin Brendan, who began writing together during the pandemic. We’ve witnessed and heard testimonies from countless musicians who were forced to struggle—financially and artistically—through the lockdowns of the pandemic. For some who have survived, there’s been the silver lining of a shift in perspective. Many artists dug deep in isolation and discovered the solution to long-elusive mysteries. Some let go of the tried-and-true and instead explored new means of expression.

While we’re hopefully emerging from the final Covid surge, it’s a welcome that an artist like Christine Jensen is opening ears to the magic of reflection on her long, turbulent days and months locked down.
