Country Blues Guitarist GLEN FOSTER Releases “White Funeral” From ‘Unnatural Tendencies’ Album

Thu Apr 25, 2024

After four decades in the music business, Glen Foster has earned the right to break any rule he wants. And this happy iconoclast shows no signs of compromise on “White Funeral,” a whimsically morbid country-blues number that appears on his latest album, the trend-bucking Unnatural Tendencies. Check it out on YouTube here:

Like a winking eulogy to a vanishing era, the song finds Foster chronicling the impending demise of one Old Snake, a “hardened old metaphoric character” who gets stranded in the desert just as it’s starting to snow.

Glen Foster Captures the Ease and Breeze of a Perfect Summer on ’60s-Tinged “Different Highway”

Fri Jul 28, 2023

Warm days, wind in your hair, not a single care in the world. Nanaimo, BC- based singer-songwriter Glen Foster captures the ease and breeze of the perfect summer road trip with his new single “Different Highway” from his forthcoming album Unnatural Tendencies.

Using a 12-string electric guitar to imbue the song with a little bit o’ twang reminiscent of the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn or George Harrison on “Eight Days a Week,” Foster purposely sought a ’60s Summer of Love vibe on “Different Highway.”

That was me you saw for a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of your eye
You were standing in line with him waiting there When I went shuffling by
You looked so cute when I caught your glance Your ticket in your hand
I knew you were excited to see me again
Here on my one night stand

The song waxes introspective and philosophical on the musician’s life itself. “The concept is that musicians may be on a different highway, but still chasing the same old dream,” Foster explains.

In late February, about a month before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world, Glen Foster and friends — known professionally as the Glen Foster Group — presented a full-throttle live concert to an intimate crowd of just over 150 people at the Christ Community Church in his homeland of Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island, in the West coast of Canada. Now, as Canadians are quickly becoming fully vaccinated, Foster has released this epic, 80-minute concert as his first-ever live album. It features 14 live cuts spanning his entire back-catalogue, and two bonus tracks recorded from the studio floor — “Friends Like That” and “Three Man Band.”

Life and death. Love and hate. Wealth and poverty. Sickness and health. Whatever it is you want in this life — or want to avoid in this life — it might be closer than you think. "Time, distance, events: They're all relative," he says. "Some things seem like they're a long way off when in fact they're very close, while other things seem so close when they're actually far off. Life is full of coincidences and connections and uncertainty."

That's never been truer than today. Even so, there are still some things you can count on — like the impeccable craftsmanship, stellar musicianship and life-affirming positivity this respected B.C. veteran always brings to the table.

Glen Foster Has the Rockabilly Fever

Glen Foster takes his fun seriously. Especially these days.

"Right now I'm into creating a positive message," explains the veteran singer-songwriter and accomplished guitar slinger. "I want to be encouraging and not just concentrate on all the negative things in the world. As a musician, an entertainer, I want to be uplifting, put a smile on somebody's face and maybe make them laugh a little bit. I don't want to be on a platform or be a preacher. I just want to make great music that people like."

The new EP contains four songs, the title track ‘Party Out There Tonight’, ‘Feel Alright’, ‘Somewhere Over the River’ and the really great offering ‘Rockabilly Fever’.
