Ottawa-Based Indie Rocker Lady Charles Glitters Confidence In "Manic Pixie Dream Boy"

Fri Apr 14, 2023

In pop culture, a manic pixie dream girl is usually a dreamy, troubled girl whose sole purpose is to inspire a male character. Lady Charles takes this archetype and makes it a more gender-fluid and empowering one through their new single, "Manic Pixie Dream Boy." Check it out on YouTube here:

The song begins with an 80's inspired guitar groove that brings to mind bands like Blondie in their "Autoamerican" era. Then, Lady Charles' sonorous vocals kick in as they casually sing about who they are and why other people shouldn't bring them down.

"To all those sideways glances
Quit harshing me!
'cause I'm a manic pixie dream boy
Trying to live authentically"

Ethereal-sounding lyrics emanate from Lady Charles’ flirtations into the meshings of bright electropop and subtle rock genres. Following their latest single off their album Manic Pixie Dream World, ‘Godx’, a synthy, electronic pop delve into the relationship between gender and religion, Noella (Can’t Get Enough of You) is a deeper look into what the pandemic meant for loving relationships. On the surface, Noella explores a romantic relationship, one shared between those in the spotlight. Lady Charles and their partner, Stef, concocted fictional personas for the subjects of this track. Noella personifies a glorified version of Stef as a Youtuber who shapes their persona around the “parody of the eccentric artist archetype.”

Canadian Pop Artist Lady Charles Imagines A Healing, Gender-Fluid Deity on Synthy, '80s-Heavy "Godx"

Fri Sep 16, 2022

Gender is a construct cobbled together by a multitude of influences over the millennia, but our concept of a deity, or deities, has certainly had a significant impact. Ottawa-based pop artist Lady Charles tackles religion’s influence on gender and the LGBTQ+ community in the lighthearted, dance-heavy banger “Godx” – check it out on YouTube here:

Synth-y and steeped in the ’80s in the best possible way, “Godx” boasts a bubbly groove and a fierce-but-whimsical bassline.  “I wanted to write a song about gender that touches on issues like how colonialism enforced the gender binary and how LGBTQ+ people have historically been excluded from religious life,” Lady Charles said. “I did not, however, want to create something too serious or overt, and instead wanted to create a silly pop song you could dance to that would still feature those themes beneath the surface.”
