In 2016, Bara Jonson and Free submitted the song Appetite to Melodifestivalen in Kristianstad, Sweden.  It didn’t make the cut. The song was released later that year anyway and went on to live a life of its own.

Now, almost exactly ten years later, it’s time again. “Appetite ANNO X” is released the same weekend Melodifestivalen returns to Kristianstad. Sometimes life and timing are magical, and this is no exception with the latest release from BjF.

BjF “Appetite ANNO X” plays with desire from a place of control, blending confidence with humour and irony. The final softened “control,” followed by a subtle laugh, reveals a narrator who is not only aware of the power dynamic but comfortably in charge of it.

“Appetite ANNO X” is not a remix but a new production of the song Appetite, built on the same vocal performance as the original version. With ten years of distance, the duo has returned to the core idea from 2016 and completed what was never quite finished back then. A more dance-driven expression that was part of the original vision, but somehow got lost along the way.

This is neither a nostalgic look back nor an attempt to rewrite history in a 10-year-old song; it is more about the same song with a freshly produced single, carrying a message for women everywhere to feel free to express themselves.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
Bara Jonson and Free (BJF) have performed on many live stages in Europe, from showcase festivals in Sweden to touring in Canada and appearing at the prestigious MIDEM festival in Cannes, France, in 2019, on a featured Showcase stage. That year also garnered them a featured showcase appearance at Indie Week in Toronto, Canada, at which they were nominated as ‘Best Emerging Artist – International’ at Indie Week Showcase Festival in Toronto, Canada (2019), then selected and announced INES#Talent 2020-21.

In 2023, Bara Jonson and Free (BjF) performed on the Canadian Stage at Spike Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and on the Uline Warehouse stage at the world’s biggest music festival, Summerfest in Milwaukee, USA. They have also toured Denmark, Holland, Germany, and the UK.

Malin Osth and Jonas Tancred (BjF) are also the owners and producers of the Lilla By Festivalen in Rinkaby, Sweden, where, every year, the festival welcomes Canadian artists to perform alongside Swedish talent, proving music has no borders. With strong ties to Canada, BjF have toured in the Great North at Indie Week, were guests at CMW and became official Newfoundlanders by “Kissing the Cod” and actually wrote a song about their experience:
Hello Newfoundland!

Plans are underway for the return of BjF to Canada with a special performance as part of North2North’s reciprocal performances of Crossing Borders – Building Bridges.

This is neither a nostalgic look back nor an attempt to rewrite history in a 10-year-old song; it is more about the same song, but with a freshly produced single, carrying a message for women everywhere to feel free to express themselves.

RPP (Real People Play) is an impactful statement for the current state of recording today.

It signifies that the music and lyrics are written by real human creators, and that the performances, recordings and production are carried out by humans. Modern digital tools may be used in the process, including software instruments, programmed elements such as drum loops, editing and contemporary studio production techniques.
However, the artistic authorship, creative direction and production decisions are human-driven, and the release is not AI-generated.
