“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez

“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez is a series that introduces Canada’s own Jorge Martinez with very special guest Oscar Lopez.

Jorge Martinez has but one mission at his fingertips: to carry us away, namely to his native Argentina. With remarkable virtuosity, he composes and performs Flamenco-inspired music with Latin and Oriental accents. But be warned: the man plays faster than the speed of light! When he flies off on magical solos, Jorge never does so alone – he takes us with him.

Jorge is already highly regarded in his adopted home – the province of Quebec,  but not yet as well-known in the rest of Canada and, to that end he and his stellar band, along with very special guest, Oscar Lopez will appear in concert in three of southern Ontario’s best venues.

Jorge Martinez closes out this first season of the “Legends in Little Rooms” Southern Ontario tours that saw truly amazing concerts from internationally renowned artists, Strunz & Farah and Ottmar Liebert in March and April.  Now it’s Jorge’s turn.

He relocated from Argentina to Montreal some ten years ago, and with cross-Canada performances tucked under his belt, he is poised to take off once again. Jorge, last summer, fulfilled one of his greatest dreams when he was invited to open the Paco de Lucia concert in Winnipeg.  The year before, he was honoured to share the stage with the legendary Cesaria Evora. He opened for her at one of her last concerts in a packed Place des Arts.

Ryan Laird to play with Emerson Drive

While he's no stranger to Fort McMurray (Ryan Laird played The Summer's End Festival with Dierks Bentley last September) up and coming country sensation Ryan Laird said he's excited to revisit the Oilsands City as the special guest opening act for Emerson Drive's show Friday at the Casman Centre.

"We saw a bear just as we were driving in last year onto the festival site to do the show," said Laird from his home base in Ontario. "For us it was a big deal. It was pretty cool, just on the side of the road there. Just being so far north is really fun, but I really hope we get to see a bear again before this show."

At 19, Laird moved from his hometown of Fergus, Ont., to see if he could make a name for himself in North America's country music capital, Nashville, Tenn. He said he fell in love with the songwriting community in the Music City, appreciating the number of like-minded, talented people.

Prepared for the slow process of breaking into the already bulging music scene, Laird said he knew it was important to make sure his sound was solid before drawing the attention of any major labels. And it paid off, because somewhere along the line, between crashing on friends' couches and buying up ad space on a billboard asking Taylor Swift to produce his album, people started to take notice.

BEASTIE BOY ADAM YAUCH (a.k.a. MCA) DEAD AT 47 YEARS OLD

A post on the Beastie Boys website reads, "It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam "MCA" Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer."

In 2009, Yauch revealed in a video posted online that he was being treated for cancer in a parotid gland and a lymph node. He had since undergone surgery and radiation therapy, and was pursuing alternative treatment, including a vegan diet. It was reported in early 2011 that the rapper was cancer free, but he was quick to take to the Beastie Boys website and refute the reports.
Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys in 1979. The group started out as a hardcore punk band but later turned to rap and rock and became the lineup of Yauch, Mike "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad Roc" Horowitz (later, "Mix Master Mike" Schwartz would join in). They burst onto the music scene in 1986 with the seminal album Licensed to Ill, which spawned the classic hit "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)."

Yauch sat out the Beastie Boys' induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, and his treatments delayed the release of the group's most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2, which was eventually released in April, 2011.

MONKEY HOUSE RELEASE NEW ALBUM HEADQUARTERS AT THE ORBIT ROOM MAY 15, 9PM

Alma Records recording artist Monkey House releases its fourth album Headquarters at Toronto’s Orbit Room on May 15 – 9PM. Monkey House is the adventures of Toronto based singer-songwriter, composer and author, Don Breithaupt. The new album is guaranteed to please the group’s devoted international following, and will appeal to all lovers of musically and lyrically sophisticated pop music.

Breithaupt had a clear mandate for Headquarters: “I wanted to make it sound like the music that meant the most to me, music was made in big rooms with live bands. I resolved not to cut corners.” The result is a disc with a rich, full sound rare in these days of programmed production. “There are at least ten musicians on these tracks. All the keyboards are live: grand piano, clavinet, Rhodes, Wurlitzer and B3. I think Headquarters sounds warmer than anything I’ve ever done,” says Don.

Don produced the album, with invaluable assistance from Juno-winning engineer John “Beetle” Bailey at The Drive Shed Studios in Toronto. They worked with a cast of A-list players, including Canadian rock stars Kim Mitchell and Rik Emmett, and Steely Dan guitarist Drew Zingg and musical director Michael Leonhart. Breithaupt was happy to let these talented players and singers off the leash. “My process is probably two thirds homework and planning ahead, and one third letting things happen and respecting people’s creativity and spontaneity,” he says. Most tracks feature horns, and lush male and female backing vocals help weave a vivid sonic tapestry.

YIN: Yoga In the Nightclub

Finding the Divine Everywhere
Story: Pavarti

The role and corresponding responsibility of the artist has never been more potent than it is now. The creative process, whether conscious or not, taps into a collective field of energy, to such an extent that literally what we each do, think and create both reflects and shifts the directive of our collective consciousness as a whole. Through conscious co-creation between inner inspiration and the collective field of consciousness, I feel that we each have the ability to assist an alchemical shift in human consciousness from leaden attitudes to golden possibilities.

It was in service to this understanding that I travelled to the North Pole in 2010. At the top of the world, I performed several of my songs to help raise awareness of the melting polar ice. I came home from that journey feeling charged with an even stronger connection to an immense, universal force that can help each one of us wake up, so that we may join together as one Earth family and create positive environmental change to benefit all. The documentary of my journey is currently in pre-production, aiming for a fall release.

Levon Helm Remembered by Hawkins

Levon Helm, the legendary drummer and singer with the popular rock-and-roll group The Band, died Thursday after losing his 14-year battle with throat cancer.

Helm was 71.

The three-time Grammy Award winner had been fighting throat cancer since 1998. He passed away at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York surrounded by family.
"He just played two weeks ago," Ronnie Hawkins told CTV's Canada AM on Friday.

"It's been a very sad two, three days, but we were told. We were kind of expecting it," Hawkins said during a phone interview from Lakefield, Ont.

The Juno-winning rockabilly star was one of the first musicians to work with Helm and the members of The Band.  The group, comprising Helm, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel met as the backing group to journeyman Hawkins in the late 1950s.

Those were happy times, according to Hawkins. "We laughed at everything. We were learning. We didn't know nothin'," Hawkins, said with a laugh.  "All we wanted to do was play. Canada was a promised land for us," he said.

During his career, Helm was most widely known for the songs he sang with The Band that found their way onto the pop charts.  Those earthy, folk-rock tunes included "Up On Cripple Creek," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Don't Do It."  Helm and The Band also became Bob Dylan's backing band, touring with the singer in 1965, 1966 and 1974.
