When the industry moans and groans about the fact that the current music scene has no talent they should hang out at some of the all ages shows booked around town. There you are bound to find some of the best bands going right now. It is refreshing to hear these young, talented up & comers do covers of songs like Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walking”, The Clover’s (and Searchers) “Love Potion #9”, and weirdest of weird, the 1962 Joannie Sommer hit “Johnny Get Angry.”

Sunday, May 20 of the Victoria Day weekend, a CD Launch party in Toronto was held in the unique 2nd floor downtown venue, Hard Luck Bar, where a few hundred young revellers came to party to Free Criminals, Stranded Cruiser and the unique Swamp Yankees.

The crowd was movin’ and groovin’ along and the party seemed set to coast into an easy close when the headliner band, Ruthless Ones hit the stage. The dance floor was immediately overtaken with an instant mosh pit, and Ruthless Ones kicked into high gear. The scene was instantly explosive and it was obvious this band had true, faithful followers.

Kevin Chase - Cutting to the Chase!

Kevin Chase.jpg

Submitted by Don Graham

From kitchen parties to touring mainland China, it’s safe to say that Kevin Chase is living the dream he’s been chasing since music became his life’s work.

As a kid in  New Brunswick, Kevin’s folks would take him along to the kitchen parties in the area. A “kitchen party” is a traditional Atlantic Canada social gathering and some fine music emanates from these gatherings. It was at these gatherings that Kevin developed his love of country music and when he got a little older he discovered rock. Putting the country and the rock together came as natural to Kevin as putting chocolate and peanut butter together came to other folks at Reeses.

Since making the move into the music arena, Kevin has released two critically acclaimed albums, “Another Road” and “ I Won’t Fall” and his new CD “Hold On Tight” is set for release in North America.

The new single from the “Hold On Tight” CD is a rocking remake of the Waylon Jenning’s classic “Lonesome, Ornery and Mean”C hase explained from his Maritime home, “ I always loved this song by Waylon and I think we brought it into the 21st century and gave it a new edge. It’s a great stage song to jam out on and people seem to love it.”

Mothers and Music

By Don Graham

Mothers Day is this Sunday and what a great time to honour our mothers, whether they are gone or are still here.  What does Mothers Day have to do with music and Cashbox? Not a lot, directly I guess, but when I got to thinking about music without mothers or their influence it staggered me to see the importance.

Would we have country music without MOTHER Maybelle? Rock ‘n’ Roll without That’s Alright MAMA?  How about The MOTHERS of Invention? California pop without the MAMA’S and Papas?  What songs wouldn’t have been written without our connection to mothers? MAMA Tried, Merle Haggard, Your MAMA Don’t Dance, Loggins and Messina, MAMA Told Me Not To Come, Three Dog Night, MAMA liked the Roses, Elvis Presley and all the way back to My MAMMY, Al Jolson. And the list goes on.

So take a little time this Sunday to pay homage to your mother, if she’s already passed on, pray for  her, if she’s still here, hug her tighter than ever and thank her for all she’s done.

We all have a lot to do in this busy world we live in but NEVER get to busy to call your Mama!!

“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez

“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez is a series that introduces Canada’s own Jorge Martinez with very special guest Oscar Lopez.

Jorge Martinez has but one mission at his fingertips: to carry us away, namely to his native Argentina. With remarkable virtuosity, he composes and performs Flamenco-inspired music with Latin and Oriental accents. But be warned: the man plays faster than the speed of light! When he flies off on magical solos, Jorge never does so alone – he takes us with him.

Jorge is already highly regarded in his adopted home – the province of Quebec,  but not yet as well-known in the rest of Canada and, to that end he and his stellar band, along with very special guest, Oscar Lopez will appear in concert in three of southern Ontario’s best venues.

Jorge Martinez closes out this first season of the “Legends in Little Rooms” Southern Ontario tours that saw truly amazing concerts from internationally renowned artists, Strunz & Farah and Ottmar Liebert in March and April.  Now it’s Jorge’s turn.

He relocated from Argentina to Montreal some ten years ago, and with cross-Canada performances tucked under his belt, he is poised to take off once again. Jorge, last summer, fulfilled one of his greatest dreams when he was invited to open the Paco de Lucia concert in Winnipeg.  The year before, he was honoured to share the stage with the legendary Cesaria Evora. He opened for her at one of her last concerts in a packed Place des Arts.

Ryan Laird to play with Emerson Drive

While he's no stranger to Fort McMurray (Ryan Laird played The Summer's End Festival with Dierks Bentley last September) up and coming country sensation Ryan Laird said he's excited to revisit the Oilsands City as the special guest opening act for Emerson Drive's show Friday at the Casman Centre.

"We saw a bear just as we were driving in last year onto the festival site to do the show," said Laird from his home base in Ontario. "For us it was a big deal. It was pretty cool, just on the side of the road there. Just being so far north is really fun, but I really hope we get to see a bear again before this show."

At 19, Laird moved from his hometown of Fergus, Ont., to see if he could make a name for himself in North America's country music capital, Nashville, Tenn. He said he fell in love with the songwriting community in the Music City, appreciating the number of like-minded, talented people.

Prepared for the slow process of breaking into the already bulging music scene, Laird said he knew it was important to make sure his sound was solid before drawing the attention of any major labels. And it paid off, because somewhere along the line, between crashing on friends' couches and buying up ad space on a billboard asking Taylor Swift to produce his album, people started to take notice.
