The History of the Toronto Humane Society

Toronto Humane Society Poster

Music Fundraiser Planned for Toronto September 13, 2010

The establishment of The Toronto Humane Society was inspired by an anonymous $2 donation to aid an old, worn-out white workhorse. In November 1886, a Toronto resident sent a letter about the horse, a familiar sight on city streets, to the World, a Toronto daily newspaper. “Why,” he asked, “don't we have a society for the prevention of cruelty?” was the comment added to the letter by 22-year-old reporter John J. Kelso when it was published in the World. In answer to his question, an anonymous donor sent the $2 donation to the newspaper office the following day. The fund kept growing until $74 had accumulated.
John Kelso's presentation to the Canadian Institute on February 19, 1887, marked the launch of the humane and children's aid movement in Ontario. In his speech, Kelso pointed out there was no society of the kind in Toronto and proposed the establishment of a general humane association with the following objectives:
• Stop cruelty to children
• Rescue children from vicious influences and remedy their conditions
• Put humane literature into schools and homes
• Induce children to be humane
• Encourage everybody to practice and teach kindness to animals and others
• Stop the beating of animals
• Stop overloading street cars and wagons (which were then pulled by horses)
• Stop the working of old horses
• Stop driving galled and disabled animals
• Introduce drinking fountains for horses
• Prevent the clipping of horses, docking of tails

4th Annual Hollyrood Country Jamboree

TERRY SUMSION

Submitted by: RB Renegade, Singer, Songwriter & Radio Host

The 4th annual Hollyrood Country Jamboree (Corbyville, Ontario) was a great success that resulted in a $2000 contribution to Camp Trillium. Camp Trillium operates two sites in Ontario. Oddfellow and Rebekah Island, formerly Garratt ’s Island (since 1989), near Sandbanks Provincial Park in Picton, and Rainbow Lake (since 1997) in Waterford. Camp Trillium also travels to ten different Ontario cities, operating Day Camp programs in the summer.

The three-day program featured outstanding talent with a feature performance on Saturday night by Prairie Oyster. I personally had the privilege of being backstage on July 4th for the final day’s events. Leading the way for Sunday’s program was MADISON KOZAK. Madison hails from Lindsay, Ontario and as a young girl (13) her command of the stage is that of someone much older. She is backed by a solid band, including backup vocals by her dad Larry Kozak. She presents a wide-array of selections including traditional and contemporary classics with some of her self-penned songs thrown in for good measure. Upon completion of her performance at Hollyrood, she was heading to Toronto to board a plane for Nashville for a meeting with management group that currently works with Taylor Swift!!

The Sure Thing Five playing the Downtown Jazzfest (Toronto)

Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra feat. Ingrid Jensen

By James Lizzard

Ain't saying these are the best acts you'll see at the Jazzfest, just saying these are Five Sure Things y'all don't want to miss

Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra feat. Ingrid Jensen

JUNE 28, TORONTO STAR STAGE, NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE

Straight outa BC and nothing to do with Diana Krall, the Jensen sisters Christine and Ingrid blow it hard and hot against backdrops of lush orchestration. Composer/saxophonist Christine and trumpeter Ingrid are developing a unique brass signature, most recently heard on new album Dancing Sunlight.

Mavis Staples & Allen Toussaint Band

JUNE 30, TORONTO STAR STAGE, NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE
Got Mavis Staples weaving the 'spel' in Gospel, got Allen Toussaint with the blood of all the N'Orleans musics throbbing in his veins and what y'all got is on one kickass, hair-raising soulful roots throwdown. Word is Staples is working material from the
We’ll Never Turn Back album, celebrating the spirit of N'Orleans Africa-American community post-Katrina. community in the wake of Katrina.
Allen Toussaint be likely just dishing up righteous soul food from a deep menu that shouts the history of American roots music

TOMMFest (Tristin Osborne Memorial Music Festival) started with a dedicated group of volunteers at the family home of Tristin Osborne 5 years ago. TOMMFest was established for Tristin Osborne who passed away just ten days short of her 24th birthday. Tristin was a warm, caring person who believed that all people, independent of the abilities and disabilities, have worth, importance and contributions to make. In spite of her own learning disabilities, her focus on education was specializing in teaching children with disabilities and educating the educators who taught them. The Osborne family decided to put positive energy toward allowing her beliefs and dreams to carry on by way of a scholarship program – The “TRISTIN OSBORNE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP” is given away annually to a learning disabled student who is determined to achieve post secondary education.
