“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez

“Legends In Little Rooms” Guitar Series with Jorge Matinez is a series that introduces Canada’s own Jorge Martinez with very special guest Oscar Lopez.

Jorge Martinez has but one mission at his fingertips: to carry us away, namely to his native Argentina. With remarkable virtuosity, he composes and performs Flamenco-inspired music with Latin and Oriental accents. But be warned: the man plays faster than the speed of light! When he flies off on magical solos, Jorge never does so alone – he takes us with him.

Jorge is already highly regarded in his adopted home – the province of Quebec,  but not yet as well-known in the rest of Canada and, to that end he and his stellar band, along with very special guest, Oscar Lopez will appear in concert in three of southern Ontario’s best venues.

Jorge Martinez closes out this first season of the “Legends in Little Rooms” Southern Ontario tours that saw truly amazing concerts from internationally renowned artists, Strunz & Farah and Ottmar Liebert in March and April.  Now it’s Jorge’s turn.

He relocated from Argentina to Montreal some ten years ago, and with cross-Canada performances tucked under his belt, he is poised to take off once again. Jorge, last summer, fulfilled one of his greatest dreams when he was invited to open the Paco de Lucia concert in Winnipeg.  The year before, he was honoured to share the stage with the legendary Cesaria Evora. He opened for her at one of her last concerts in a packed Place des Arts.

Scott Woods Band – Fiddle Legend Tour

Woods.jpg

Scott's dad Merv started playing old time music in 1944 as a youngster. His very first performance was a fundraiser for the local school house just outside of Fergus, Ontario. By 1950, he had formed his own band known as The Merv Woods Orchestra. They soon became very busy playing for dances, socials, garden parties, weddings, anniversaries and many more fundraisers.

In 1956, a young lady named Carolyn Dyer joined the band as the pianist. The Dyer family was very musical and had for many generations been playing Old Time Fiddle Music. In 1960, Carolyn & Merv were married and went on to have 4 children, Elizabeth, Kendra, Bruce and Scott.

All of the children studied classical violin and piano and were already performing with the band by the time they were 8 years old. From large stages and theatres to community halls, school houses, barns and even a raft in the Elora Quarry.

Montreal’s socially conscious bands hard rock acts Society’s Ills, The Era Of, Rudebeats and Isolate Cast  came together this past Saturday, February 18th for the 4th annual Blankfest Quebec to answer the call to help those in need during Montreal’s coldest winter months and raised over 600 clothing items for the city’s largest and oldest shelter, theOld Brewery Mission.
“I’m always impressed by the generosity and compassion from the city of Montreal, its citizens and its music scene. Their support along with media and sponsors to help raise awareness and proceeds is always astounding,” commented Blankfest Quebec organizer and music publicist Jon Asher.

Proceeds from this year’s Blankfest Quebec came not just from the music community, but also from grandmothers across Quebec.“My heart was truly touched by the kindness of this year’s donations of knitted blankets, scarves and tuques that came from both the ladies at the Steger Residence in Montreal and the “Townships Grandmothers” who quilted blankets when they heard there was a need to help the homeless.”

Let the Led Out With Michael White’s Orchestral Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin is one of the most popular hard rock bands to come out of Britain in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Jimmy Page was one of three guitarists that included Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton that played in a powerhouse group called “The Yardbirds” Page decided to continue the band with singer Robert Plant, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. In 1968 he launched the band and called it “The New Yardbirds”. The story goes (and there are different versions) that on hearing the name Keith Mooncommented that it would go over like a Led Zeppelin, hence the name change and a deal with Atlantic Records and the birth of a legacy band.

Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980. In 2007, 27 years later and with solo careers in the middle, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited (along with John Bonham's son, Jason, Bonham past away in 1980) for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London, England. The band was expected to do a world tour of select cities, but to the dismay of fans of all ages it never materialized.

Michael White had a promising career in the USA with bands like the Boyz and with his remarkable range and physical similarities to Robert Plant it wasn’t long before he paid tribute to the British rockers with an uncanny reenactment of the quartets blistering stage show.

BLANKFEST BENEFIT DEBUTS IN CALGARY

Blankfest

Calgary AB- It's about the homeless, nothing more, nothing less. That is the message as Blankfest Calgary presents in its first annual clothing fundraiser for Calgary's homeless shelter The Mustard Seed on November 5th at the aptly named Blind Beggar Pub.

The event, spearheaded by Calgary-based SIN Agency’s Leanne Harrison, is bringing together the local music scene for the great cause that will support those in need during Calgary's below zero winter months and are exposed to dangers such as frostbite.

"Blank-Fest first came to my attention a couple of years ago via Jon Asher with his Montreal based project  Blankfest Quebec.

I knew right away that it was something I wanted to be a part of as its long been a passion of mine that a little understanding, knowledge and respect will go a long way to helping the homeless situation in our country and our cities.

“My partner and I are quite excited to have SIN Agency be a part of this awesome project and hope to see it grow. We are also really excited at the bands that are lining up to be a part of this event, and really proud to see that the musicians we are all about step up and show their compassion, respect and support for Blank-Fest and The Mustard Seed! On a personal level, I can't think of a better legacy to leave behind than that Blank-Fest Calgary become a continuously growing annual event." commented Blankfest Calgary organizer Leanne Harrison.

Pete Traynor The Man, The Music, The Struggle

Traynor-Benefit-Poster.jpg

By Bill Delingat

If you were a young musician struggling to make it in the heyday of the hippie movement in Toronto’s Yorkville, you probably carried around your old Strat and a Traynor amp, the then affordable Canadian competitor to the Fender twin reverb, while your drummer packed his Ludwigs into the back of the families station wagon .

The place to go was Long and McQuade, located at Yonge and Yorkville, to stare at the many unreachable instruments and dream of the day that you may own one.

Pete Traynor worked at the Long and McQuade Music Store as a repairman, mainly fixing the broken rentals that came back from the now infamous “B” circuit of Northern Ontario. Traynor started off by customizing amplifiers as a way to save costs, but also like a good home auto mechanic supercharging up his car, Traynor did the same for amps. His talent and curiosity led to his making of his own brand, the first brand formed by Yorkville Sound. It all started in 1963 through experimentation and experience, Traynor developed a Bass amplifier that he called the Traynor Dynabass. By the end of 1963, Traynor started off by offering the product out as a rental and soon was selling the Dynabass amps along with matching 15-inch speaker cabinets; then the logical transition to portable columnar P.A. systems when Traynor  found a reference book of 1930s RCA commercial loudspeaker designs. Soon a business partnership to sell these amps had formed between Pete Traynor and Jack Long, the man who owned the legendary music store.
