Montreal neopsychedelic quintet The High Dials are always a ton o’ fun whether rocking out or getting all atmospheric and groovy. With a new album to preview, you know the Dials will be throwing down their best to impress and word is the new tunes are among their best ever.
It feels like this one is the distillation of all the pop and psychedelic influences they’ve toyed with during the three previous albums. ‘Chinese Boxes’ has a swamp rock, countryish feel, while ‘The Rich Die Too’ is all lush, dreamy. minor chorded landscape. And closing ballad ‘Bedroom Shadows’ is a spooky, skittish thing that wouldn’t have been out of place on the Inception soundtrack.
Recorded in an abandoned building that once belonged to the Canadian navy, the Montreal band’s fourth full-length studio album, Anthems For Doomed Youth, benefits from the beautiful natural reverb in the large admiral’s ballroom. Bravely undeterred by claims that the room was haunted, the band forged ahead after a number of spooky supernatural experiences and emerged with their most authentic and mature work to date. Mixed by Michael Musmanno (Lilys) in New York City, Anthems For Doomed Youth was released on November 2nd. The band will celebrate the successful and critically acclaimed release with US and Canadian tour dates.
