Friendly RichFriendly Rich

Come month's end, Canadian composer/performer Friendly Rich will bring his brand of strange music to The Burdock, joined by Viva Mexico Mariachi Band to back him for a special night of musical oddity.

His latest release The Great Blue Heron features Hawksley Workman (drums, synth) and Kevin Breit (bass, mandolins, guitars), and takes Rich's compositions and adds a unique element to the sound. It's swampy, gritty, and weird as ever! Take a listen today on Spotify.

"I'm excited to be backed by a mariachi band," says Rich, "and make Good Friday Great Again!"
The night will kick off with opening sets by Velvet Crystals, Sarah Jane Scouten/Graham Mansfield and it all goes down Friday, March 30 The Burdock with an 8 pm showtime.

Slambovian Circus of DreamsSlambovian Circus of Dreams

Called everything from ‘hillbilly-Pink Floyd’ to ‘folk-pop’ to ‘surreal Americana’, New York’s Slambovian Circus of Dreams serves up melodic avant-folk that conjures with an exotic instrumental arsenal and palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York over a decade ago, they pioneered the alt-folk circuit, staying on the fringes of the music industry. Winning support from indie radio and press since their inception, fans fueled their career from the ground up to an international status. Having headlined major music festivals and venues across the US, Canada and UK, this band has a devoted cult following. “Soothing and bewitching as a snake oil tonic, the entire root system of Rock's Family Trees is embedded in Longo’s voice”, says The Big Issue in Scotland. Lead singer-songwriter Joziah Longo is joined by Sharkey McEwen (guitar, mandolin), Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, etc), and Felipe Torres (drums, percussion). They create a captivating vibe that feeds the soul and do get da booty to shakin'.

Excuses ExcusesExcuses Excuses

Excuses Excuses has delivered "Pizza & Cigarettes," the first single from their sophomore EP Catch Me If You Can, out June 1.Catch Me If You Can’s six songs mark a coming of age of sorts for Excuses Excuses, as—having left their teenage years behind—the trio comprised of guitarist/vocalist Kyle Wilton, bassist Trevor Bowman and drummer Jason Nicoll delves into more complicated lyrical themes and, by extension, an overall harder-hitting sound. Recorded at Chalet Studio north of Toronto with producer Justin Meli and drum consultant Jordan Gauthier (YC Drum Company), the songs took shape around Nicoll assuming a full-time role in the band and represent the first true examples of Excuses Excuses’ uncanny ability to balance raw power with impeccable melodicism!.

Kyle Wilton explains, "'Pizza & Cigarettes' is a song about freedom in the 21st century. It speaks on fighting to be free in such a restrictive, outdated society and comments on how many other people will try to control you and direct you in life. In reality, it is only your desire that matters. I wrote the song at a time when I was deciding whether to try to make music a career option or continue on the path towards an average life. The song is meant to reinforce peoples' understanding that life doesn't need to be a straight path. In 2018 there is a lot of unpredictable things going on, and people need to know that this is indeed, okay.

" With Catch Me If You Can, Excuses Excuses build on the creative foundation laid down on their 2016 five-song debut release Frame Of Mind, and the ensuing year spent honing the band’s incendiary live show. The new EP also sees them poised to join the ranks of Canadian bands such as July Talk, PUP, and The Dirty Nil proudly cranking it up to 11 on the international stage.

Fresh off the release of their buzzing debut album Basic Behaviour out now via Arts & Crafts, rising Toronto post-punks FRIGS today share the new video for standout track “Solid State”.

"The video for ‘Solid State’ acts as a homage to inner dialogues that are common, spanning: gender, age and background,” explains frontwoman Bria Salmena. “While the video was intended to be a darker, more surreal exploration of these themes, the filming process ended up being a typical comforting visit with my grandmother. Exploring her aged house, and enjoying a meal with her. We were able to capture a candid and somber time. The real effect the video has is one of overwhelming nostalgia and self-reflection."

Basic Behaviour, FRIGS’ debut, self-produced full-length, was written and recorded over a 16-month period, split between two locations: the band’s home studio and Union Sound Company in the east end of Toronto. As much as the lyrical subject matter within the record reflects personal experiences of frontwoman Bria Salmena, the album is a product of years of self-discovery as a unit. Recording at home allowed the band to take the time to explore their sound, experimenting with sonic textures and production, and meticulously re-working their material. These sessions proved to be invaluable in creating a sound unique to FRIGS. However, a degree of positive urgency was deemed necessary in order to finalize the process. Working with engineer Ian Gomes, FRIGS embraced the limitations of third-party studio time and completed the record with a sense of immediacy. The resulting contrast between these two approaches in recording creates an end product that is at once stark, chaotic, reflective, and manic, ultimately forming the core of Basic Behaviour’s identity.

FRIGS is made up of Brea, Duncan, Lucas, and Kris. The band pairs the raw, emotional grunge of PJ Harvey with the immersive, psychedelic post-punk of early Sonic Youth. With each member bringing a unique set of influences, FRIGS create a sound that is hard to pin down and an impression that’s unshakable. Led by the force of Bria’s vocals, the band has earned a reputation for putting on a hypnotic and visceral live performance. Embracing the mercurial and experimental, their shows are built upon instinct; a vocal growl can unexpectedly give way to a hushed whisper; languid drones boil over into guttural and searing tones.
