The name Cashbox has a history – and that involves the Jukebox. Decades ago, when the jukeboxes were in every restaurant and bar wherever music was played. The money was collected on a weekly basis by a company who would then empty the Cash Box located inside the Jukebox, and the number of plays were calculated inside the machine. These spins were then reported to record stores and radio stations who used this as guidance to what the public would like to hear and purchase. This is how Cashbox Magazine developed the Cashbox Charts. Did you know that Cashbox Magazine invented the bullet? (That was the highlight that signified the hottest songs) We asked our industry friends, artists and readers to tell us what their favourite summer song and it was met with great enthusiasm and we thank you for that! From Beatles to Beach Boys, our virtual jukebox man, Lee Verbony, has assembled the Cashbox Canada Summer Songs for you to enjoy! Log on to www.tropicalglen.com and crank it up!
We wanted to share some of the submissions and comments we have received with these song choices. Happy Canada Day!
BOYS OF SUMMER..DON HENLEY Incredible guitar theme by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Henley nails the lyrics. Feels like a hot summer night with windows down driving down the PCH.....watching the waves crash into the shore.
KEVIN MONTGOMERY NASHVILLE SINGER/SONGWRITER/ADVENTURER
HERE COMES SUMMER JERRY KELLER This is one of those songs that stays with you as a summer memory!
FRASER NEWCOMBE SINGER/SONGWRITER/OWNER OF ATLANTIC MUSIC PROMOTIONS
My go-to summer song is SUNSHINE DAY by OSIBISA. It's got that lazy, funky, lay-in-the-sun, favourite thirst-quencher at your side, book in your lap, tropical-feel to it that few songs about summer ever captured

SOMETHING IN THE AIR THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN 1969. It was everywhere, all the time. I could play it (I sure as heck couldn't sing it - the highest note demanded is an Eb !!) The piano was delightfully loony and inappropriate. I also liked TIME IS TIGHT by BOOKER T AND THE MGS. (You didn't have to sing that.) Same year. It was the year of my first professional band, see
GEORGE BOWSER (BOWSER & BLUE)
I guess it depends what era. Eddie Heywood from the 50's, George Benson also, but my fave off the top of head is BILLY STEWART and SUMMERTIME
DEAN HAGOPIAN RADIO INDUSTRY VETERAN DJ
Anything by CARL PERKINS, CHUCK BERRY or RICKY NELSON...in my Rockabilly Days we played what they called teen dances at all the Lake Resorts in the area and those songs were on the radio on the juke boxes and made our summers rock.
DICK DAMRON COUNTRY SINGER HALL OF FAME
For some reason I think of CROSBY STILLS NASH & YOUNG NEIL YOUNG’S HELPLESS. I guess the mention of North Ontario etc.
BRUCE GOOD 8 TIME JUNO WINNER, MEMBER OF HALL OF FAME GOOD BROTHERS
It isn’t a summer song but whenever I hear GENTLE ON MY MIND by GLEN CAMPBELL it takes me back to summer at my grandmother’s house walking by the railroad tracks. Great lyrics that still resonate today!
DON GRAHAM – SINGER/SONGWRITER
HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME – SLY & THE FAMILY STONE because it was hot fun in the summertime back then !

CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS – I played a show with him last summer and that song still does it for me !

NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND'S "FISHING IN THE DARK" always sounds like summer to us! Growing up, our family used to go up the lake in our canoe. Dad would take us fishing in'SONG IN the afternoon, and at night we would sit around the campfire singing. Summer on the lake was always our favourite time of year!
CARLI & JULIE KENNEDY – SINGER/SONGWRITERS/RECORDING
I was in a music meeting when I first heard the opening guitar licks of this tune in 2005! I immediately pictured driving myself down the highway with the windows down and that tune cranked!!!! To this day, I still have his CD in my car and refuse to attend any Greg Hanna show where he's not performing SONG IN MY HEAD !
BILL HART DJ & RADIO PERSONALITY
The song "THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN" by THIN LIZZIE always reminds me of summer and brings back memories of when the camping season starts at our trailer park! Everyone is back for another great summer and ready to have some fun! YeeHaww !
BILLY J WHITE – COUNTRY SINGER/SONGWRITER RECORDING ARTIST
JACK & DIANE by JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP reminds me of my parents taking my brother and I camping in the mountains of B.C. in the summer. It was one of those tunes that my Dad played on the way to the campground and while we were camping. It still makes me want to have my windows rolled down and the music blaring while singing at the top of my lungs !
ERIN HALEY SINGER/SONGWRITER
My fave summer song FISHIN' IN THE DARK by THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND
JASON MCCOY COUNTRY SINGER/SONGWRITER
My favorite summer song is TAKE IT EASY by THE EAGLES...probably played that tune 1000 times around various camp fires and to this day I get requests at outdoor parties. I can remember one specific part where we had over 50 people all singing along without missing a single word and to me that was a huge rush. Cranking THE EAGLES on a hot summer day is like sipping on a glass of Tequila Sunrise!
JON PATTERSON SINGER/SONGWRITER
Summer songs -- wow -- there are many --but one that really resonates for me is, DANCING IN THE STREETS. Although originally recorded by MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS I love DAVID BOWIE AND MICK JAGGER’s version. Having spent time in New York in the heat of summers past, I’d watch people on the streets cool off in water from opened fire hydrants with BOWIE AND JAGGER blaring in the background. That’s what summer’s all about-- dancing in the streets -- at parades, festivals, or just because.

My favourite summer tune is IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT by THE FIVE SATINS it brings back memories of The Bonaventure Curling Club on Cote de Liesse in Montreal. I was 13 at the time and when that song came on everybody ran to be with the girl you wanted to be with. It also is where I got the music bug, the bands that played there: M.G & THE ESCORTS, J.B. & THE PLAYBOYS, THE RABBLE, THE HAUNTED, THE ESQUIRES ect, many fond memories and still get chills when I hear that song.

My favourite song from those days is IN THE SUMMERTIME by MUNGO JERRY. Brings back memories.
GARY NEUMANN PRODUCER
It's not really a summer song but it was released in the summer & we first played it at a gig in Fitchburg Mass in the sixties: A WHITER SHADE OF PALE PROCOL HARUM

Ours is THE THINGS WE DID LAST SUMMER, FRANK SINATRA. During our teen years and our courting days. Lyrics were ‘the things we did last summer I’ll remember all winter long. Eventually we got engaged at a summer cottage. Ann and I have been married 60 years this year. THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE by PERCY FAITH a Canadian!

I have five songs that come to mind and always remind of summer…
1) SUMMER IN THE CITY (BY THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL)
2) PENNY LANE (THE BEATLES) It came out in the spring but they played it all summer (along with STRAWBERRY FIELDS) and it describes a summer day so perfectly. Plus it's so bright and poppy sounding.
3) IN THE SUMMERTIME (MUNGO JERRY) I really was sick of the song when it came out as they played it soooooo much. But now when I hear it, it conjures an era of convertibles, picnics at Emerald Lake, swimming, and AM radios. I spent 2 weeks camping with 4 friends when I was about 14 and every time a song comes on the radio that was on the 1050 Chum Chart those 2 weeks, it takes me right back there.Lots of songs remind me of summer.
4) And though you don't hear it as much, JOHNNY RIVERS' SUMMER RAIN. melancholy, but summery.
5) Also there's SUMMER WIND by FRANK SINATRA and any of those BEACH BOYS surfin' songs. Especially 'GOOD VIBRATIONS'.
They just don't sound as good in the winter do they?

HOTEL CALIFORNIA by THE EAGLES...don't laugh, it was an 8 track. I grew up in Hanover. (Grey/Bruce County) In the winters we got two weeks of snow days and in the summer we got pure heat and humidity. This story is not for the faint of heart or those of right and wrong. When it got hot and there was a bush party to go to we'd hop in my parent's 2nd car (a shit box Vega with an 8 track) 4 guys and a case of beer. We'd go gravel runnin', which means you cranked the tunes and drove around gravel back roads drinking beers in the car. Still to this day I can pop a bottle with a lighter or a seatbelt. We'd pull the car up to the fire when we got to the party and left the windows down so everyone else there could one of the greatest bands of all time...THE EAGLES
PS: no one should drink and drive...times were different then..I am old… lol.

Good thoughts. Oddly enough I think JUMP by VAN HALEN is my fave as it brings great memories. My two sisters and I played on the same summer soccer team with Dad as the coach and Mom and our dog on the bleachers. We always played JUMP before leaving the house to get up for the game.
KELLI TROTTIER FIDDLE PLAYER SINGER/SONGWRITER
GOOD VIBRATIONS from THE BEACH BOYS and THE BEATLES' PAPERBACK WRITER - the summer I arrived from the UK was extremely hot and I stayed in a rooming house for the first few weeks but there was little air inside so we would go across the street to a local parkette and join others and listen on a little transistor radio - likely 1050 chum AM, they always played great music and those two songs remind me of that relatively stress-free time.

There are moments in my life when I hear a song that immediately take me back to my summers as a kid – hearing SURFIN’ USA by THE BEACH BOYS or BABY TALK by JAN AND DEAN from years gone by but the delightful SUGAR, SUGAR by THE ARCHIES tops them all. A complete charm of a pop song (and co-written by Canadian ANDY KIM) it’s a genuine heart-stopper. Forget if you liked Betty over Veronica, this was the #1 song of the year in North America during the Summer of Love. 40 years later, you can’t help but smile when you hear it because the entire 2:48 is an earworm. Not bad for a bunch of ‘cartoon characters.’

Definitely DON HENLEY'S BOYS OF SUMMER! Driving with the top down under the perfect summer sky while listening to BoS at full volume reminds you how fantastic life can be.

RADAR LOVE GOLDEN EARRING I first heard this travelling with my band to the U.K. Always great memories for me!

There's so many tracks that make me think of summer... but I think the main one would be JOURNEY'S DON'T STOP BELIEVING. I think just about every summer party I've ever been to ends with a loud, energetic karaoke of this song. Whenever I hear it, I can't help thinking about being squeezed onto a couch between friends or huddling around a warm campfire or watching the hockey game, and belting it out at the top of my lungs.
KIERAN STRANGE – SINGER/SONGWRITER/RECORDING ARTIST
I'll choose THE LETTER by THE BOX TOPS, though it could be dozens of others...my reason for that choice was the summer of 1967 was the first time I had left home, hitchhiking from Victoria to Montreal to be part of Expo and Canada's Centennial year. By mid-August I was pretty homesick, though enjoying myself, and THE LETTER hit the radio for me the same day I received a letter from my girlfriend. Others from the same memorable summer could include ODE TO BILLIE JOE by BOBBY GENTRY, or the summer anthem of 1967 ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.
GREG SIMPSON INDUSTRY VETERAN
My most memorable summer song is MICHEL LEGRAND'S romantic movie tune, SUMMER OF '42. It was summer of '71, when I won the single in the Toronto Telegram's After Four Contest...played it so much the vinyl ended up more warped than the boys in my math class!

As a fan of The LOVING SPOONFUL, SUMMER IN THE CITY would easily be my favourite "summer" song. Captures the essence of a New York City summer day/night, and I spent many of them in The City. Hot, sticky, no air .... and wonderful. No place like The City!
DAN ‘ZOOMER’ ZIMMERMAN GUITARIST & INDUSTRY VETERAN
So many great songs ! KIND OF A DRAG THE BUCKINGHAMS, WOULDN’T IT BE NICE THE BEACH BOYS, DIRTY WATER THE STANDELLS and GOOD DAY SUNSHINE THE BEATLES.

GOD ONLY KNOWS by THE BEACH BOYS. I was working for Capitol, and had a 45 rpm player in my car. I went to Wasaga Beach every weekend and loved playing this driving on the beach...

We were camping in The Adironack Mountains in the summer of 1969 and the local band in the bar were playing RIDE CAPTAIN RIDE by BLUES IMAGE and OYO COMO VA by SANTANA. It was the first time I had heard either of those songs. It was the summer that I fell in love with live entertainment.

My first and only ever summer fling was triggered (and subsequently fuelled) by the film adaptation of “High Fidelity”. My sweet-heart and I would watch that movie constantly, and STEVIE WONDER’S “I BELIEVE (WHEN I FALL IN LOVE)”, it was our cue to start being all gushy, and gross, and whatever. Looking back some 12 years later, it’s painfully obvious how stupid and “teenager-ey” I was, but I still can’t hear that song without thinking of my first: love, heartbreak, and most importantly - summer love. I know it's one of the cheesiest songs ever written, but that's the point, isn't it?
